What’s the difference between the Gardens Management Committee, the “Feuars”, and the Moray Feu & Neighbourhood Residents Association?

The Gardens Management Committee (GMC) is commonly referred to as “The Committee” although its formal title is “The Committee of Management of Lord Moray’s Pleasure Grounds”.

The GMC is responsible for everything that happens within the gates of the four gardens of the Moray Feu. The Moray Feu & Neighbourhood Residents Association and addresses matters that are outwith the gardens.

GMC members are accountable to and elected by the garden owners, generally referred to as “The Feuars”. (They have a quaint formal title, too: The Feuars Responsible for the Upkeep of Lord Moray’s Pleasure Grounds.) The Feuars are property owners in the Moray Feu whose deeds require them to pay an annual assessment to support the maintenance and improvement of the gardens. All Feuars are “key holders”. Many people who rent their homes in the Moray Feu also have keys as a benefit of their lease and are obligated to follow the rules for use of the gardens, but they do not have voting privileges at the Feuars’ AGM.

The GMC oversees long-term planning for planting and garden fixtures, sets the rules for garden use—including rules pertaining to dogs in any of the gardens—and employs two full-time gardeners, John Hughes and Melvyn Clench.
